Hi Guys,

Im new to Mugen and this forum. I think I may have commited the cardinal sin, I bought my MBX5 on ebay! and i may have been caught.

Its was advertised as a standard MBX5, but as I understand, there is the Prospec and the R. Can anyone tell me what the diffrences are please?

Also it cacme with an engine a Mach 28 . I think there is something wrong with the engin, as it is very erratic, and making strange sounds (like its missing). Not a major problem as I want to get a 21 size , I hear that the Ninja JX is really good and well suited to this car, any advice on engines and where to get a good second hand one that has no problems would really help me out.

I Also need to buy servos and radio , (Im a stick man), can you give me any advice on what to get, I want to go digital but not sure about how to get stick digital, is some kind of convertor? Again looking to buy second hand.

I paid £100 for the Mugen, it has some upgrades, but Im a bit dissapointed that the engine is cuput, but Ithink £100 for rolling chassis is an ok deal?

Many thanks in advance for any help you can give me

John

the 5r came with alloy chassis braces, 1 piece engine mount, different design arms, and some other subtle bits, have you a picture of the car ?? that will help me identify which it is.

Is the engine spitting out fuel from the exhaust ? it could be rich still and need tuning, did he say how much fuel it had through it,  are you able to removed the head and look at the piston?

regarding engines you can buy good new ones for decent prices novarossi do a brilliant 3 port engine for around 150 2nd hand engines are a BIG gamble i rarely buy used engines as its a massive head ache. Also take into account you will need a starterbox if you get an engine like the ninja/novarossi as i believe the mach to be pull/roto start

servos are fine to buy used as long as its off a respectable person i run savox/hitec/sanwa servos i have some for sale actually but thats a different matter. radio if your a stick man you can go crazy on ebay for the futaba,ko propo, sanwa radio range,  try to get a radio with 2.4g that way you will never have to worry about crystal changes

£100 for a mugen in good condition is a good deal, most importantly if your happy with it and it doesnt need to have money spent on it thats what matters

Many thanks for your advice, attached is a pic, please see below the description that was on ebay

engine did apear to be running rather rich, they chap reakoned that it had had about 1 gallon and a half of byrons 25%. I used Model technics 25% "buggy" with it. I have not had the head off yet, not really sure what I should do and what to check. I tried a few adjustments with low and high end needles to try and tune it and eventualyy got it started and able to idle, but it eas making an funny noice, like a constant humm and got very hot! When I gave it thottle, drive shafts engaged and there was plenty of compression, but engine just drowned out, it ran down and switched off, which indicated to me thatthe low end was too rich , but why was it getting so hot and doing the humming on idle? very eratic to say the least. Its not a pull start, and I have SMD starter to get it going.

heres the description that was on ebay

Here is my looked after Mugen MBX5 for sale. It is a standard MBX5 but comes with a few upgrades and spares.

Mach .28 engine and pipe. Seen around 1.5gallons of byrons 25% and still has plenty of compression. You will require a starter box tho.
Spare glow plug for engine.
Glow start and will included a charger with it.
A shell which is a big bashed up but still fits fine.
Set of good condition wheels.
Spare set of shocks and springs.
Has hardened lower arm supports
Hardened shock towers front and rear.
Hardened chassis braces
Carbon fiber radio plate
Hardened anckerman.
Spare wheel nuts and hubs will be included.

The servos pictured will not be included so you will need fuel, starter box, rx and tx and servos to complete. I will include a rx battery tho but with no charger.

the car looks clean and in decent condition which is a good start, it also has the 5r braces on it,  overall id be happy to have that car for £100

regarding the engine im not sure how much experience you have had with the hobby and nitro engines?

Does the car roll freely when the electrics are turned on/off just to make sure the brakes are not binding, can you take the engine out,

there should be 4 screws underneath the chassis or you can remove it from the top via the 4 screws next to the crankcase, you will need to unscrew the exhuast mount and detach the fuel tube and detach the throttle servo.

after this you will need to check the clutch, remove the screw on the front of the engine in front of the clutch bell, and remove the clutch bell,  you are looking for damaged springs on clutch shoes that are heavily burred.

do you have the factory settings for the engine as it may be worth returning them to that, also check all the screws are tight on the engine.

also check the exhaust and make sure the silicone seals are okay, we are checking for air leaks at this point

Sorry mate for all that without seeing it im working on a guess basis, i suspect it just needs a little tlc and a tune and it should be okay

Thanks very much for the advice, I will try all of what you have sugested, In the meantime ive just bought myself a tasty little omega (AKA picco) .21 x6, brand new in box for £90 . Its an older model hence the price, but Im told its very poky on short tracks. Needed a 21 as I can't race albeit novice level with a 28.

Thinking of putting 28 into my schumacher fussion if I get it going.

Best!!
