Hi guys,

I'v sold up all my flying rc toys and am going buggy racing, I'v bought a mbx5 from ebay with a minja motor in it which runs very well, and the car is more than fast enough for me.

I'v searched your site for some time now and found some good setup tips and sheets, what I'm really looking for though is setup sheets specifically for astro turf, as I'll be racing there this sunday.

I'v already modified my setup somewhat from how I practiced with it there last week, I was getting alot of grip roll so I'v raised the roll centres and added neg camber and also increased camber change at rear, just looking for some sheets to get some ideas of the changes a pro would make for a fairly tight kinda bumpy astro track.

Thanks

John

Hi John

Finding  a setup sheet for the mbx5 may not be easy mate. Its getting on a bit now  Sad. Also there was not many if any Astro tracks about when we ran the 5. The best thing maybe to look at setup sheets for the mbx6 from dirt to astro to see what gets changed.  Thicker diffs are very good when its dry. Or just give us some idea of what the cars doing and what you want it to do them manybe we can advise on what to change.  Which track are you going to Huh?

many thanks karl

Hi mate

Realise she's a bit old but still a good machine, and tough, which as I'm just starting out is good.

Track is swindon, its about to get bigger and faster but at the mo its a fairly tight astro track, bumpy but with only small jumps, the main straight is quite fast into a big banked corner then the centre of the track is fairly technical and slow.

I drove on the circuit for first time last weekend, this sunday will be my first race, i'm not exactly experienced driver, in fact very much a novice. I had blue springs, I think 2 2 5 diff oils, upright springs, low roll centre, suposedly 0 camber, but when measured turned out to be inconsistent pos camber. The car was grip rolling alot on turn in and just not particularly stable.

I'm looking for a forgiving, stable setup that will help me drive faster and more consistently and crash less. Using losi step pin tyres, and have a set of angle spike for wet.

I'v changed to 'laid over springs', higher roll centre and 2.5 neg camber rear and 3 ish front. raised the roll centres front and rear. will see how it goes

Any tips appreciated, tyres are just what came with car, seems everyone is using shuey mini pins for dry, will get some when step pins are knackered (won't take long!)

Thanks in advance for any help, have found quite a few of sambucas setup sheets on here, but not much for astro.

Ok Blue springs are  soft so move up to the gray. If you have . Also the diffs are a major part of it. If i was running on  astro i would be on At least 10 10 and 5 in the rear. If and when you really know the track you could go up higher.

c how it gos

I may still have some Mbx5 stuff. Will dig it out and let u know

Yep, at least 10-10-5 in the diffs. I like 15-15-7 more.
You want 3.0mm swaybars in the front and rear. Just cut a 3.0mm rear swaybar so it fits in the front.
Change to harder springs and thicker shock oil. I don't know for the small shocks since the mbx6 has big bores. Go 100-200cts thicker than most dirt setups and 1-2 springs rates.

Rear camberlinks on the shocktower in the upper position. This lowers the rollcenter. Also shorten you camber as much as possible, this will result in more cambergain while cornering.

A big part is the tyres. A lot of people cut of the knobbs to avoid traction roll.
Cutting the outside of the tyre will reduce griproll a lot. Cutting the inside of the tyres makes the car more stable under braking. Cut 2-3 rows on the outside of the tire and 1-2 rows on the inside. Most have 3 cutted rows on the outside and 2 on the inside.

Thanks for your help guys

The race went well untill the rear diff locked up and I had to retire, still enjoyed myself up till then though.

I'v stripped all my diffs and found the rear empty and the front and centre are torsen's.

Well, I say there torsens, they have 8 worm gears, one in line with each drive cup, four vertical to this and two on a shaft through the centre. I think they are a torque biasing diff, but not of the true torsen design as there are no spur gears. I'v cleaned and greased these and fixed the rear, and put a 12500cst silicone oil in it as its what I had here at work.

I'll run it tomorrow and see how she behaves, gotta be better than my last run with a solid rear axle!!!

New springs and tyres and shock oil will be the next 'mods' to be made.

Is there anyone out there with a standard front and centre diff for an mbx5?

regards

John
